GMC Typhoon 1992 - 1993
The GMC Typhoon is an iconic compact SUV launched in 1992 that marked GMC Typhoon history by embodying the segment of sport leisure vehicles even before the term SUV became popularized. Produced until 2005, this model experienced two distinct generations, the first from 1992 to 1999 offering angular styling and dynamic performance, then a second generation from 2000 to 2005 displaying rounder forms and more powerful V6 engines. The used GMC Typhoon remains highly prized by collectors, notably thanks to its permanent all-wheel drive versions and its ability to combine highway comfort with light off-road capabilities. Positioned between the Ford Explorer and the Chevrolet Blazer, GMC Typhoon generations distinguished themselves through more aggressive design and more luxurious equipment than direct competition. The GMC Typhoon model largely contributed to establishing GMC as a leading manufacturer in the segment of premium family SUVs, with a heritage that influenced the design of future GMC Acadia and Terrain models. Although it has disappeared from the current catalog, the GMC Typhoon specification sheet, combining reliable gasoline engines, progressive automatic transmissions and comfortable suspensions, explains the lasting appeal of this heritage asset among automotive enthusiasts.
