Matra

Matra is a French automotive manufacturer founded in 1941, initially under the name Mécanique-Aviation-Traction, which progressively established itself as an innovative player in the French automobile market between 1962 and 1983. Matra's history truly begins in the automobile industry in 1962 with the launch of the M530, an exclusive sports coupe produced until 1967, followed by iconic models such as the M630 launched in 1969 and the M630 CS in 1973, which positioned the brand against rivals like Porsche and Alpine, while targeting a clientele of demanding enthusiasts. The Matra range subsequently diversified with racing single-seaters and, especially, with the Espace launched in 1984 in partnership with Renault, an innovative vehicle that revolutionized the minivan segment. The Matra manufacturer also developed electric vehicles and experimental prototypes, affirming its desire for technological innovation, while its production took place at its Romorantin-Lanthenay and Saint-Germain-des-Fossés sites. Strategic alliances, notably with Renault from the 1970s onward, enabled Matra to strengthen its presence and innovation capacity in a market dominated by major French and European manufacturers. Matra technical specifications reflected lightweight and high-performance sports vehicles, with V6 and V8 engines for top-of-the-line models, embodying a distinctive French approach to accessible motorsport.
