Oldsmobile

Oldsmobile, an automotive manufacturer founded in 1897 by Ransom E. Olds in Lansing, Michigan, embodies over a century of innovation and evolution in the American automotive industry. A General Motors subsidiary since 1908, the brand progressively established its positioning between popular and premium segments, notably rivaling Pontiac and Buick within the American giant. Oldsmobile's history is distinguished by iconic models such as the Alero (1999-2003), the Cutlass (launched in 1961 and produced until 1999 in several generations), and especially the Intrigue (1996-2002), which represented mid-size sedans offering competitive equipment-to-price ratios. Between 1961 and 2004, the Oldsmobile range covered a vast palette of vehicles: from compact cars to full-size sedans, including station wagons and family vehicles, with production concentrated across several American sites including the Lansing plant. Oldsmobile technical specifications reflected GM's technical DNA: V6 and V8 engines, three- or four-speed automatic transmissions until the 1990s, then more modern technologies such as widespread front-wheel drive and electronic fuel injection systems. Despite revitalization efforts in the 1990s and 2000s, including the launch of the Aurora (1994-2003) positioned as a premium sedan, Oldsmobile progressively lost market share to Japanese brands and evolving consumer preferences. General Motors announced the brand's discontinuation in 2000, with official production cessation in 2004, ending over a decade of existence.
