Porsche 356

The Porsche 356 is the first automobile produced by Porsche, launched in 1948, and remains one of the founding models of the German sports car legend. A pioneering sports car, it marked the history of the Porsche 356 with its revolutionary rear-engine, air-cooled architecture and lightweight tubular chassis, establishing the principles that would define the brand for decades. Between 1948 and 1965, more than 76,000 units were built, offered in several generations and body variants, from coupe to convertible to the iconic Speedster, each refining the balance between lightness and performance. The Porsche 356 generations followed one another with gradual developments of the flat-four engine, growing from 1,086 cc to 2,000 cc over the years, while Erwin Komenda's timeless design remained remarkably consistent. The Porsche 356 model was positioned in the premium segment of European sports cars, in direct competition with the Jaguar XK and the Mercedes-Benz 300 SL, but stood out for its handling and renowned reliability. Today, the 356 enjoys the status of an essential classic, sought after by collectors worldwide, while its historical technical specifications continue to inspire Porsche engineers in the design of current models, notably the 911, which is its direct descendant.
