Smart
Smart, a brand born in 1997 from the association between Mercedes-Benz and the Swiss Swatch group, revolutionized the segment of small urban cars by imposing a new concept of compact and economical automobile. Officially founded in Germany and based in Hambach in Moselle for European production, this Smart story is presented as a direct response to urban mobility challenges and traffic restrictions in major cities, positioning its vehicles in direct competition with the Peugeot 107 and Toyota iQ. Smart models, particularly the Fortwo launched in 1998 and the Roadster that appeared in 2003, marked a decade of growth with an affirmed positioning on energy efficiency and road agility. The Smart range progressively enriched itself until 2019, integrating alternative propulsion technologies and responding to changes in electric mobility, notably with the launch of the ForTwo electric in 2010. The Smart manufacturer produced more than two million vehicles between 2002 and 2019, with significant presence in Western Europe and gradual expansion to Asian and American markets. With its technical sheets emphasizing lengths under 2.7 meters and moderate fuel consumption, Smart distinguished itself through its iconoclastic approach to automobile design and its commitment to urban sustainability.
