Wolseley

Wolseley is a British automobile manufacturer founded in 1901 by Herbert Austin, resulting from the transformation of the Wolseley Tool and Motor Car Company engine company, established in Birmingham. Wolseley's history is inscribed as one of the oldest lineages of the European automotive industry, with a major presence in the British market throughout the 20th century. Between 1905 and 1976, the brand gained a prestige positioning in the family car and middle-class sedan segment, rivaling major brands like Morris and Austin, offering Wolseley ranges characterized by elegance, reliability and mechanical innovation. The most emblematic Wolseley models include the Wolseley 6/80 (launched in 1948, produced in over 25,000 units), the Wolseley 1500 (1957-1965), and the Wolseley 18/85 (1962-1975), which embodied the refinement of British sedans of the era. Wolseley operated primarily from the Ladywood factory in Birmingham, the historic heart of English automobile production, before being progressively integrated into the British Motor Corporation (BMC) group in 1952, then into British Leyland in 1968. Wolseley specification sheets highlighted robust petrol engines, carefully appointed interiors and advanced suspension technologies, positioning the brand between Austin and Riley for a discerning clientele. Production ceased in 1975, marking the end of an emblematic era for the British manufacturer, whose heritage remains recognizable in current prestige car collections.
