BMW E1 / E2 1991

The BMW E1/E2 represents one of the most ambitious attempts by the Bavarian manufacturer to democratize electric mobility, with a visionary project that marked the 1990s in Europe. Launched in the prototype and demonstration phase from 1991, the BMW E1/E2 model embodies BMW's philosophy in the face of emerging environmental challenges, positioned as a compact electric urban vehicle intended to reduce polluting emissions. The history of BMW E1/E2 begins with the E1, a revolutionary two-seater prototype powered by lead batteries, followed by the more refined E2 with NiCd batteries, both tested intensively in a limited fleet until the mid-1990s. These BMW E1/E2 generations never achieved series production despite their technological avant-garde, remaining demonstration vehicles with limited use by municipal services and strategic partners. The positioning of this BMW E1/E2 model placed it in direct competition with similar initiatives such as the Renault Clio electric and the Citroën Saxo electric, in an urban segment where range and infrastructure costs remained prohibitive. Although the project was abandoned commercially, the legacy of the BMW E1/E2 generations remains fundamental in the manufacturer's electric strategy, laying the conceptual foundations for future electric models such as the i series. Today, the E1/E2 technical specifications testify to a pioneering vision, reminding us that BMW was seriously considering the electric transition three decades before its current generalization in the automotive market.
