Packard

Packard is an American automotive manufacturer founded in 1899 by brothers James Ward Packard and William Doud Packard in Warren, Ohio, which marked the history of luxury automobiles during the first third of the twentieth century. Packard's history is characterized by a quest for technical excellence and prestige, positioning the brand at the same level as its rivals Peerless and Pierce-Arrow in the American high-end market. The Packard range offered sophisticated automobiles destined for a wealthy clientele, with iconic models such as the Twin-Six launched in 1915, equipped with a revolutionary 7-liter V12 engine producing 85 horsepower, as well as the famous Packard Clipper of the 1940s. The Packard manufacturer diversified its activities by founding Packard Motor Car Company and also producing marine and aeronautical engines, notably engines for military aircraft during World War II, testifying to the company's recognized mechanical expertise. Between 1899 and its closure in 1958, Packard manufactured approximately 160,000 vehicles at its Detroit and Warren plants, before merging with Studebaker-Packard Corporation in 1954, an alliance that proved insufficient to counter the rising power of General Motors and Chrysler.
