Piaggio
Founded in 1884 in Italy by Rinaldo Piaggio, the Piaggio house progressively established itself as a major manufacturer in the two- and three-wheeler sector before extending its Piaggio history to small automobiles in the 1950s. As early as 1957, the brand launched its Piaggio range of small cars, targeting a mass market seeking accessible and economical mobility, a positioning similar to that of Fiat with its Nuova 500 or Renault with its Dauphine. Between 1957 and 1961, the Piaggio manufacturer developed several compact models destined for modest families, leveraging the success of its Vespa subsidiary and its recognized mastery of lightweight mechanics. Piaggio models from this period are distinguished by innovative technical solutions, refined design, and controlled fuel consumption, responding to economic constraints of post-war Europe. Production organized primarily on Italian sites, with Pontedera and Genova remaining the jewels of the Piaggio empire alongside its specialized workshops. Equipped with modest motorizations (two-cylinder and single-cylinder engines of 400 to 700 cc) and reduced dimensions, these vehicles captured a growing share of the small car and compact sedan market in Italy and Southern Europe during this reconstruction period. Consult our period brochures to discover in detail the Piaggio technical specification and embedded equipment that defined these automobiles of the Italian industrial era.
