Plymouth

Plymouth is an American automotive brand founded in 1928 by the Chrysler Corporation, positioned as Plymouth manufacturer for the entry-level segment destined to compete with the Ford Model A and Chevrolet. Officially launched in 1930, the brand rapidly gained significant market shares by offering reliable and accessible vehicles, becoming one of Chrysler's three major divisions alongside Dodge and DeSoto. Plymouth's history spans nearly 70 years, marked by iconic models such as the Plymouth Fury (1956), the Plymouth Barracuda (1964), a direct rival to the Ford Mustang, and the Plymouth Road Runner (1968), an exceptional sports coupe declined in several generations until the 1980s. The Plymouth range covered all segments of the American market, from family sedans to station wagons, through sports coupes and compact cars, with production initially concentrated in Georgia then diversified across multiple North American sites. Despite periods of strong profitability in the 1950s and 1960s, the manufacturer progressively lost influence from the 1970s onward, facing the oil crisis, intensified competition, and strategy changes within the Chrysler group. Plymouth models from the 1980s and 1990s, such as the Voyager (family minivan launched in 1984) and the Neon (economical city car from 1994), attempted to modernize the offer, but failed to reverse commercial decline. The brand definitively ceased production in 2001, ending a rich Plymouth history and technical specification but ultimately eclipsed by North American automotive market evolution.
