Scion
Scion is an automotive brand founded in 2003 by Toyota, specializing in the segment of small urban vehicles and sporty coupes aimed at young drivers in North America. The history of Scion is built on a clear differentiation strategy: offering affordable, customizable, and trendy cars, positioned between standard compact models and premium vehicles, competing against rivals like Mazda or Honda. From 2007 to 2016, the Scion lineup underwent a notable evolution with the launch of iconic models such as the xB (compact minivan), the tC (sport coupe), the iQ (ultra-compact city car launched in 2008), and the FR-S (sporty coupe introduced in 2013 in partnership with Subaru). The Scion automaker relied on proven Toyota technologies, engines ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 liters delivering between 106 and 200 horsepower depending on the model, and a diverse lineup covering the urban, compact, and sporty segments. Scion vehicle production came from Toyota plants in Japan and North America, while the distribution network was exclusively North American. Although the brand accumulated financial losses and saw its market share decline after 2010, with an entry-level price starting at around $15,000, it retained a loyal fan base until its dissolution in 2016, with the final models and Scion specifications marking the end of a unique commercial experiment by the Toyota Group.
