Gemini Behind the Wheel: Renault Brings Google's AI Into the Cabin

For a long time, we laughed at car voice commands: "Call mom" that dials the mechanic, "Find a bakery" that suggests a gas station 40 kilometers away… That time may be coming to an end. Since June 2026, Renault has been rolling out Gemini, Google's artificial intelligence, in the cabin of its connected models. And for once, the innovation isn't happening under the hood, but in the way you talk to your car.

A shift, not a gimmick

Concretely, Gemini replaces the old Google Assistant on the openR link multimedia system equipped with integrated Google. The difference isn't cosmetic. Where the Assistant was content to execute simple instructions, one at a time, Gemini seeks to understand context and intent. You can therefore speak to it in natural language, chain multiple requests in a single sentence, or adjust several parameters at once — "it's cool, turn up the heating a bit and play my morning playlist" becomes a request that the car is supposed to sort out on its own.

It's the same AI engine that powers Google smartphones and services, adapted for driving: spoken responses, information retrieved in real time, and above all a conversation that no longer limits itself to a catalog of memorized commands.

Free, remote, no garage visit needed

The smartest point is perhaps here. The rollout is done through over-the-air updates, via the native connectivity of vehicles — no workshop appointment, no cables to plug in. The update is free and doesn't change the duration of the connectivity offer. In other words, cars already on the road will see their voice assistant upgrade overnight, without the owner having to lift a finger.

This distribution method says a lot about what automobiles have become: an object that, like a phone, improves after purchase. A Twingo delivered last year can today gain a feature that didn't exist when it left the factory.

From Twingo to Rafale, and beyond borders

The rollout began on June 15, 2026 across all countries where Renault is present, and it doesn't target a handful of high-end models: it covers the entire compatible European range, from the small Twingo to the large Rafale coupe SUV. The brand also announces international models, such as the Boreal or the Duster produced in India, as well as future vehicles — the restyled Mégane, the Alpine A390 electric crossover or the next electric utility vehicles to come.

Multilingualism illustrates the continental ambition of the project well: from its launch, Gemini supports thirteen languages, including French, English, German, Italian, Spanish, Dutch, Swedish, Polish, Portuguese, Danish, Norwegian and Turkish. Enough to cover the bulk of the diamond brand's European markets, from the Parisian driver to the motorist in Stockholm.

A turning point for European automotive

Beyond Renault, it's a small cultural shift that's underway. Until now, mainstream generative AI lived mostly in phones and computers. Seeing it arrive as standard in a mainstream car range — and not just in a few premium sedans — changes the game. Manufacturers are now engaged in a discreet but real race over the onboard experience, that moment when the customer judges their car no longer by the speedometer, but by the fluidity with which it responds to them.
