The comeback of the affordable electric car: Europe drops back below €25,000

For years, the electric car meant a hefty bill: large batteries, plush SUVs, and prices that discouraged modest households. The tide is turning. By 2026, a wave of compact and small electric cars will break the symbolic 25,000-euro barrier, and several models are even aiming for 20,000 euros. Europe is rediscovering a simple idea: electric for everyone.

How electric became a luxury

At the turn of the 2020s, automakers first electrified their premium range. The logic was financial: a battery is expensive, so it might as well go into high-margin vehicles. As a result, the average price of a new electric car climbed well above that of an equivalent combustion vehicle, and the environmental argument clashed with people's wallets. For an ordinary European motorist, in France, Italy, or Poland, the transition remained a pipe dream.

Two forces reversed the trend. First, chemistry: lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries, slightly less energy-dense but significantly cheaper and cobalt-free, finally made small electric cars profitable. Then competition: the arrival of aggressive Chinese brands on price drove everyone to react.

The new guard under 20,000 euros

The pioneer of rock-bottom pricing remains the Dacia Spring. With a starting price around 16,900 euros before incentives, its LFP battery and compact dimensions keep it the cheapest new electric car on the European market. Without luxury, but with the essentials, and a formula that has already won over hundreds of thousands of buyers.

The highly anticipated newcomer of 2026 is the new Renault Twingo E-Tech. The diamond brand promises an electric city car under 20,000 euros, powered by an LFP battery of around 27 kWh for roughly 260 kilometers of range — more than enough to cover daily commutes. Its neo-retro style, a deliberate nod to the original 1993 Twingo, plays the sympathy card as much as the budget card.

They're not alone. The Leapmotor T03, distributed in Europe through Stellantis, and the BYD Dolphin Surf are also positioning themselves around 19,000 to 20,000 euros. The battle for the entry price has never been more hotly contested.

Under 25,000 euros, choice explodes

Just above that, the 20,000 to 25,000-euro range becomes a genuine supermarket shelf. The Citroën ë-C3, with its roughly 44 kWh battery and over 300 kilometers of range, proves that a truly versatile electric car can remain affordable. The Fiat Grande Panda Electric, its transalpine cousin born on the same platform, bets on retro-futuristic charm — because that's also where price cuts happen: by sharing a technical base among several brands in the same group, you divide the development cost. The Hyundai Inster brings smart Korean flair with its sliding rear bench and impressive range for its class, while the MG4 reminds us that Asian brands intend to stay in the race.

German giants are preparing their counterattack. Volkswagen has launched the ID. 2all around 25,000 euros and announces, for 2027, an ID. 1 entry-level model promised under 20,000 euros. Confirming that this movement is not a blip, but a fundamental shift.

A 25,000-euro threshold heavy with meaning

Why does this 25,000-euro threshold keep coming up? Because it corresponds, in most European countries, to the price of a well-equipped combustion city car. Breaking through this barrier means putting electric on par with gasoline without even counting subsidies or fuel savings. It's also the price targeted by "affordable electric car" plans sketched out in Brussels and several capitals.

Still, "affordable" doesn't mean "stripped down." These models make choices: measured range, sometimes limited fast charging, sober finishes. But they finally make credible the idea of an electric car for a first vehicle, a second family car, or urban use. After years of promises, 2026 looks like the year electric stops being a privilege.
