The Toyota Corona is an emblematic intermediate-segment sedan in Japanese automotive history, launched in 1957 and marketed over more than six decades across twelve distinct generations. Positioned between the Corolla and Cressida in the Toyota lineup, this Toyota Corona model embodied the progressive move upmarket of the Japanese brand, evolving from a compact sedan with refined lines of the 1950s towards increasingly sophisticated and powerful vehicles. The Toyota Corona generations succeeded one another by following the styling trends of each era: the rounded shapes of the 1960s-1970s to the more angular profiles of the 1980s, then to more fluid and aerodynamic designs from the 1990s onwards, before a progressive repositioning of the model towards specific markets from the 2000s onwards. Direct competitor to the Nissan Bluebird and Mazda Capella at its peak, the Corona particularly dominated Asian and Oceanian markets, establishing itself as a reference for reliability and comfort for the expanding middle class. The specifications of the model constantly evolved, progressively integrating electronic fuel injection, powerful 4 and 6-cylinder engines, sophisticated automatic transmissions and modern safety equipment, reflecting the technological advances of each decade. Although production of the Toyota Corona model ceased in 2008 in most markets, the nameplate was revived in 2020 in certain Asian territories, thus redefining its positioning in Toyota's current offer against contemporary compact sedans and crossovers.
