Restyled Dacia Sandero: Europe's sales champion refines its formula

There are stars that don't make noise. While automotive news gets fired up over the latest electric sports car or the premium SUV of the moment, a little Romanian quietly goes her own way and sweeps the board: the Dacia Sandero is simply the best-selling car in Europe in recent years, and the preferred choice of private buyers for much longer still. For 2026, the champion gets a welcome update. Without revolution — that's not the house style — but with enough novelties to stay on top.

Europe's discreet sales champion

Let's rewind. When the Sandero arrives in Europe in 2008, it carries a simple, almost provocative promise: offer a real family car, new and guaranteed, at the price of a used one. The gamble pays off. Two generations later (2012, then 2020), the recipe hasn't changed one iota: space, robustness, the essential useful technology, and a price that remains unbeatable. Result: the Sandero has climbed to the top of the sales rankings across the continent, winning over drivers who had been paying premium prices with the competition.

Its strength? Belonging to the Renault group, which allows it to draw from a bank of proven components while cultivating an obsession with controlled costs. The Sandero has never tried to pretend to be a luxury car: it owns its status as a good, honest product without frills. And that's precisely what appeals. This 2026 facelift merely refines an already devastatingly effective formula.

A facelift that cares about style

The novelty first catches the eye up front. The Sandero adopts a new "pixelated" grille and the now famous inverted "T" shaped LED light signature, the visual DNA of the new Dacia, already seen on the Duster and Bigster. The whole thing gives the city car a more modern and assertive look, without denying its simplicity. The package is enhanced with new 16-inch alloy wheels (named Tamia), a shark fin antenna and especially a renewed color palette with lovely names: Cedar Green, Iron Blue, Sandstone, Slate Gray and Amber Yellow brighten up the bodywork.

The proportions, meanwhile, don't change: at 4.09 m long, the Sandero remains a versatile city car ideal for urban driving and daily commutes. A compact silhouette, but designed to accommodate five people and their luggage without complaint.

Petrol or LPG: good sense all the way

Under the bonnet, Dacia continues to march to the beat of its own drum, betting on simple and economical thermal engines rather than forced electrification. The range is built around three engines. At the base, the SCe 65, a 65 hp three-cylinder petrol ideal for the city and designed to keep maintenance costs down (timing chain). Above that, the TCe 100, a 100 hp turbocharged three-cylinder with notably more character.

But the real star is the Eco-G 120. This 120 hp dual-fuel petrol-LPG engine, available with a six-speed manual or new dual-clutch automatic transmission, carries a dual tank that allows for an enlarged LPG tank (nearly 50 liters) and combined range reaching close to 1,600 km. Thanks to LPG, whose pump price remains very affordable, it also reduces CO₂ emissions by up to 10% compared to petrol alone — and registers barely 110 g/km on the mixed cycle. For driving a lot without breaking the bank, hard to do better today. And for those who want it, a 155 hp hybrid engine will join the Stepway and Jogger versions by the end of 2026.

Inside: tech without the price tag

The cabin also gets a nice refresh. The dashboard is redesigned, with new air vents, new seats and a specific blue ambiance on the top journey trim. Most importantly, the Sandero steps up its tech game: it now offers a 10-inch central touchscreen with Media Nav Live connected navigation, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless smartphone replication (Android Auto and Apple CarPlay), wireless charging, keyless card and even a 3D audio system signed by Arkamys. Everything you need to travel connected, on a sensible budget.

The Sandero also takes care of daily life with the new YouClip fastening system: anchor points spread throughout the cabin (up to five) onto which cup holders, lights, hooks or phone holders clip. Add a trunk holding 410 to 1,455 liters with the seat folded, a host of storage solutions and five real seats, and you get a city car as practical as it is reassuring — with, standard across the range, modern driving aids (emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane keeping, driver attention monitoring…) and the My Safety button to manage them with a gesture. Three trims structure the offering: essential, expression and journey.

Common sense is always in fashion

With this facelifted Sandero, Dacia isn't changing course: the brand is simply refining one of the market's most intelligent products. Refreshed styling, a dose of well-thought-out technology, the unbeatable LPG advantage and prices that remain among Europe's most affordable — the formula remains devilishly convincing.
