Tucker Corporation, founded in 1946 by Preston Tucker in California, remains one of the most audacious and controversial automotive projects of the post-war American era. Tucker's history is marked by the ambition to revolutionize mass-produced automobiles with the Tucker 48, an avant-garde model equipped with an air-cooled H6 engine producing 166 horsepower, an innovative hydraulic transmission and safety features ahead of their time such as a collapsible steering column and reinforced cabin. Launched in 1948 from the renovated Chicago facility, the Tucker range offered only a single model marketed against competition dominated by giants Ford, General Motors and Chrysler, while production never exceeded 51 automobiles over two years of operation. Tucker models distinguished themselves through futuristic design signed by Alex Tremulis, notably featuring its legendary central headlight pivoting above the hood and floating rear fenders, positioning the Tucker manufacturer as a radical challenger to conventional sedans of the era. Although technically proven and equipped with an impressive Tucker technical datasheet for 1948-1949, the brand collapsed following government investigations and financial disputes that plunged Preston Tucker into legal proceedings, definitively ending this fascinating and brief chapter of American automotive industry in 1949.
