Xpeng L03: The Chinese Electric SUV Targeting the Heart of the Market at Under €35,000

Some cars measure their success in their home country long before they ever cross a border. The Xpeng Mona M03, an electric sedan launched in China, sold 175,000 units in 2025 alone — more than four out of every ten Xpeng cars sold. A runaway hit driven by one unbeatable argument over there: a starting price of around 15,000 euros. It's this very formula, reworked into SUV form, that the brand is now bringing to Europe under the name L03.

From Chinese best-seller to European SUV

The L03 isn't a standalone creation: it's the raised, coupe-SUV-bodied derivative of the M03 sedan that's taking China by storm. Xpeng unveiled the international version at the Munich show, the IAA, before rolling it out across most European markets, including France. The strategy is clear: having already laid the groundwork here with higher-end models like the G6, P7 and X9, the brand now needs a volume model, an accessible one, to truly establish itself in French dealerships.

At 4.65 m long, 1.92 m wide and with a 2.85 m wheelbase, the L03 slots into the fiercely contested compact electric SUV segment — the very one fought over by the Renault Mégane, Volkswagen ID.4 and their rivals. Its sleek coupe-like silhouette, fastback rear end topped with a light bar, and clean-lined cabin centered around a large touchscreen all play the modern card without overdoing it. The first cars spotted came in on-trend shades, from Phantom Purple to Rock Gray.

A word on the "Mona" label attached to the model. This isn't a marketing whim but a genuine sub-brand, born at Xpeng from the acquisition of Didi's smart car project — the Chinese ride-hailing giant. Its mission: to democratize in-house technology, particularly driving assistance systems, on models significantly cheaper than the "premium" Xpeng range. The M03 was its first flagship; the L03 is its second, and the first designed from the outset to be driven outside China.

Technology as the ace up its sleeve

Where Xpeng stands out from the crowd of new Chinese entrants is software. The brand has built a reputation as a specialist in driver assistance and onboard intelligence, and the L03 inherits that in-house expertise. It claims up to 249 hp and an announced range of over 600 km — figures that, if confirmed on the European WLTP cycle, would place it among the benchmarks of its category. The higher-end versions swap the entry-level trim's 18-inch wheels for 20-inch ones, with yellow brake calipers adding a sporty touch.

Price remains the crux of the matter. The L03 is announced from €34,990 in Standard Range guise, a positioning that immediately puts it in the running against the segment's best-sellers. At that price, and with the promised specs, it has what it takes to shake up a market where affordable electric cars can still be counted on one hand.

A continent-wide gamble

The real test now is turning promise into results. Xpeng is still a little-known brand in France, familiar to enthusiasts but invisible to the general public. The L03 is precisely the weapon meant to change that: a model affordable enough to widen the customer base, and technological enough to leave a mark. The context is fairly favorable, as Chinese hybrids and electric cars keep multiplying on European streets, gradually getting buyers used to names from further afield. From BYD to Leapmotor to MG, the list of now-familiar Chinese brands grows longer every quarter, and Xpeng fully intends to be part of it in capital letters.
