MG4 EV Urban: the compact electric car that shakes everything up for under €20,000

MG: a hundred years of legend, a 100% electric and Chinese future

Before diving into the subject matter, a quick historical detour is in order. MG — Morris Garages — is a British brand founded in Oxford in 1924, long associated with sports roadsters and affordable compact sports cars. Acquired by Chinese group SAIC Motor, it now operates as their offensive spearhead on the European market. An assertive comeback: since its renaissance in France in late 2022, MG has totaled over 100,000 sales. In other words, the brand with the red octagon is no longer an exotic curiosity — it's a credible, established player capable of delivering solid technical arguments at prices that make established European manufacturers blush.

The MG4 EV, launched in Europe in July 2022, had already laid the groundwork for this success. In 2023, it outsold France's Renault Mégane E-Tech and Peugeot e-308, even establishing itself as the top-selling imported compact across all powertrains. The Urban arrives to expand the spectrum even further.

A larger sibling on the E3 platform

The MG4 EV Urban is not simply an extended variant. It sits on the E3 platform, distinct from the standard MG4's, integrating Cell-to-Body technology: the battery is incorporated directly into the vehicle's structure, lowering the center of gravity, reinforcing body rigidity and maximizing interior space. A technical heritage that largely explains the generous interior proportions.

Externally, the dimensions speak for themselves: 4.40 m long (11 cm longer than the MG4), 2.14 m wide including mirrors, 1.55 m tall, with a 2.75 m wheelbase. We're firmly in the dimensions of a true family compact. On board, rear passengers benefit from 984 mm of legroom and 957 mm of headroom — values worthy of an upper-segment sedan. The trunk offers 480 liters under the shelf, with 98 liters housed in a under-floor compartment, expandable to 1,364 liters with the rear seat folded. More than enough to carry the whole family's luggage without playing Tetris.

Stylistically, the front end features triangular LED headlights with a three-level light signature and a bumper inspired by the Cyberster cabriolet. At the rear, a large 3D horizontal light bar, directly borrowed from the MG Cyberster roadster, ensures strong presence at night. The profile remains understated — let's say consensual — but the details are refined.

Three versions, two batteries, one ambition

The range comes in three configurations around two LFP (Lithium Iron Phosphate) batteries, a chemistry renowned for its longevity and fast-charging performance. The entry-level version features a 43 kWh pack delivering 149 hp and 325 km of WLTP range. The mid-range and top-tier trim share the 54 kWh battery and 160 hp, for 416 km in Comfort version and 405 km in Premium trim. Torque is 250 Nm across the board, for 0-100 km/h in 9.5 seconds and a top speed of 160 km/h — perfectly suited for the intended daily use.

On the charging front, the Urban proves serious: up to 87 kW in direct current, enabling a 10 to 80% charge in approximately 28 minutes. The heat pump comes standard on all versions — a significant advantage at French latitudes. On board, the 12.8-inch central screen sits alongside a 7-inch digital cluster behind the wheel. Notable for the brand is one real innovation: the gear selector migrates to the steering column, freeing the center console to multiply storage spaces and physical shortcut buttons. Thirty storage locations in total. Practical to the point of obsession.

The pricing gambit

List prices range between 24,995€ and 30,495€. But until June 30, 2026, MG applies a launch discount of 5,005€, bringing the entry price down to 19,990€ — an absolute first in this segment. By comparison, the Renault Mégane E-Tech starts at 39,500€, the Peugeot e-308 at 42,600€, the Volkswagen ID.3 at 39,990€. The gap is abyssal, even after deducting available incentives on European models. The 7-year or 150,000 km manufacturer warranty further strengthens the argument. MG thus sends a strong signal to the entire market: affordable electric vehicles are no longer a promise, they're a reality — and it's now setting the reference price.

The compact that redefines the benchmark

The MG4 EV Urban is not without its criticisms: the styling remains understated, and the absence of eco-incentives for Chinese models weighs on the scales. But its arguments are hard to dispute — generous space, solid range, fast charging, heat pump included and a price that reshuffles the segment's cards.
