Genesis, the Korean premium brand conquering Europe

For decades, automotive premium in Europe has been a German affair: Audi, BMW and Mercedes have dominated the market. But a spoiler from South Korea is shaking up the established order across the continent. Its name: Genesis. Still little known to the European general public, this luxury brand is climbing at breakneck speed. Meet an outsider that certainly has arguments to make.
Who is Genesis?
Genesis is simply the premium brand of Korean giant Hyundai — much like what Lexus represents for Toyota. Officially launched as an independent brand on November 4, 2015, it first conquered South Korea and then the United States, where it has since topped satisfaction and reliability rankings. Its stated ambition: compete with the big names in luxury, but with a fresh, generous and uncompromising approach. In just ten years, the brand has built a complete lineup and won a flood of international design and quality awards — a pace that few manufacturers have managed to maintain.
Style above all
To make a name for itself, Genesis understood that it needed strong styling. The brand therefore recruited one of the world's greatest designers: Luc Donckerwolke, who worked at Bentley, Lamborghini and Audi and was named "World Car Person of the Year" in 2022. Under his direction, Genesis forged an immediately recognizable identity, dubbed "athletic elegance": a large shield-shaped grille, and above all a dual light signature with two thin lines, visible from a distance, day or night. Result: cars that look like no other, neither German nor French.
This quest doesn't stop at the bodywork. Inside, Genesis cultivates the atmosphere like a craftsman: noble materials, quality leather and wood trim, meticulous assembly and large screens integrated with taste. European testers regularly praise cabins whose finish is every bit as good as German benchmarks — sometimes even a notch above. Reason enough to justify premium pricing with confidence.
A complete lineup, from sedan to electric SUV
Genesis doesn't arrive empty-handed: the brand already fields a robust lineup, designed to attack on all fronts. On the sedan front, the G70 targets the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4, the G80 takes on the 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and Audi A6, while the G90 serves as the flagship. On the SUV side, the GV70 and especially the large GV80 — offered in an elegant coupe variant — compete with the BMW X5, Mercedes GLE and Volvo XC90. The brand even launches its own sports division, Magma, to challenge BMW M and other Mercedes-AMG models. Nothing less.
The electric offensive and a sense of service
Genesis has also embraced the electric transition head-on. Its GV60, a 100% electric crossover, is built on the E-GMP platform — the same as the excellent Hyundai Ioniq 5 and Kia EV6 — complemented by electrified versions of the GV70 and G80. Ultimately, the brand even aims for an entirely electric lineup. But Genesis's other secret weapon is service: very comprehensive standard equipment, long-term warranties and careful customer relations, concierge-style. Enough to seduce customers tired of options charged by the drop. The brand is also banking on a rethought purchasing experience, with modern sales spaces and personalized support, far from the traditional dealership route.
The European gamble
After Germany, the United Kingdom and Switzerland from 2021, Genesis takes another step in 2026 by setting up in France, Italy and the Netherlands (Spain to follow). The gamble is bold: the European premium market is one of the most demanding in the world, firmly held by German manufacturers and local brands in each country. But Genesis advances its pieces methodically, betting on what has worked elsewhere: striking design, generous equipment and a still-virgin image, without the weight of habit. History will tell whether European drivers will be tempted by this alternative from Seoul.
One thing is certain: with Genesis's arrival, the premium landscape is far from done changing. On Brochure Auto, you can already discover the catalogs of the Korean brand: the Genesis G80 sedan, the large Genesis GV80 SUV and the electric Genesis GV60. A chance to get acquainted, in pictures, with the newcomer that intends to carve out its place in the sun.
