Volvo EX60: the Swedish best-seller goes electric, and aims high

At Volvo, safe values are not taken lightly. The XC60 is not just another model: it's the brand's best-selling SUV, the car that has filled dealerships for over ten years. So when the Swedish firm decides to give it a 100% electric successor, it's not just another experiment — it's a bet on its future. Unveiled on January 21, 2026, the EX60 is that car.

A new platform for a new era

The EX60 inaugurates the SPA3 platform, the latest in-house electric architecture. Its distinctive feature lies in so-called "cell-to-body" technology: instead of housing a battery pack in a chassis, the cells are integrated directly into the body structure. The benefit is threefold — less dead weight, greater rigidity, and better energy efficiency. It's the kind of evolution invisible to the eye but decisive for range.

Visually, the EX60 embraces Volvo's new electric grammar: a smooth and serene front end, the Thor's hammer lighting signature, and that family SUV silhouette without pretense that made the brand's success. Nothing ostentatious. You recognize a Volvo at first glance, and that's clearly intentional.

Three engines, and a range that hits the mark

Under the floor, three configurations. The P6 opens with rear-wheel drive at 374 horsepower and approximately 620 km of range. The P10 with all-wheel drive climbs to 510 horsepower and 660 km. And at the top, the P12, also all-wheel drive, develops 680 horsepower and claims up to 810 km of range in WLTP cycle with the large battery. For a premium SUV weighing between 2,115 and 2,405 kg depending on versions, these are figures that speak for themselves.

The most powerful version dispatches 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds — enough to surprise more than one sports car at the traffic light. But the argument that really matters for daily use is charging: the EX60 accepts up to 370 kW at a rapid charger, meaning approximately 340 km recovered in ten minutes. The time it takes for a coffee, and you're off for a long drive. This is precisely where the shift to electric plays out for heavy drivers.

The interior, this Scandinavian living room

On board, Volvo remains true to its philosophy: sobriety as luxury. Clear materials, horizontal lines, a large central screen that centralizes controls, and that sense of peaceful space the brand has cultivated all along. Safety, of course, remains at the heart of the specifications — it's Volvo's DNA, and the EX60 promises to be packed with latest-generation driving aids, in keeping with what built the manufacturer's reputation with European families.

An assumed premium positioning

The EX60 starts at 66,500 €, with first French deliveries expected in September 2026. The price clearly places the Swede at the top end of family electric SUVs, facing German competitors and newcomers. But Volvo is playing a coherent card: that of onboard technology, generous range and express charging, rather than rock-bottom pricing.

It remains to be seen whether the public will follow the XC60 in its electric transformation as faithfully as it adopted it in combustion and hybrid form. One thing is certain: in entrusting the EX60 with the flagship role, Volvo is raising the stakes. And on paper, the execution is solid — range, power, charging, safety, Sweden has left nothing to chance.
