Lancia Gamma: the return of a mythical name, in electrified coupe SUV

Forty years. That's how long it took for the Gamma name to shine on a Lancia hood again. The Turin-based brand, long reduced to its sole Ypsilon sold almost exclusively in Italy, finally lifts the veil on its second model of the comeback. And let's be clear: this is no half-measure. The new Gamma, unveiled in official images in spring 2026, aims to become the flagship of a Lancia we thought was doomed. Bold gamble or winning return? Let's take you on this journey.

The Lancia Gamma is reborn, and it's quite a renaissance

At Lancia, model names are no accident: since 1910, the brand has drawn from the Greek alphabet. The Gamma name first designated the Gamma 20 HP sports car in 1910, before being reborn in 1976 as a large fastback sedan and an elegant coupe, both signed by Pininfarina. The sedan (15,272 units) and coupe (6,790 units) remained in the lineup until 1984, before the brand gradually faded from public view.

A name steeped in history

Bringing back this prestigious name for the most ambitious model of the comeback is no coincidence. The unveiling also coincides with the brand's 120th anniversary celebrations. An intentional symbol.

From executive sedan to coupe SUV

The big change is the silhouette. Gone is the large three-box sedan: the 2026 Gamma trades its historic look for that of a coupe SUV with a fastback profile, featuring a sloping roofline and a rear spoiler inspired by, as a playful nod, the legendary Stratos of the 1970s. At 4.67 m long, 1.90 m wide and 1.63 m tall, it positions itself in the premium D segment.

Up front is the Lancia "Calice," that Y-shaped light signature already seen on the Ypsilon, with the logo spelled out in full. At the rear, the light signature forms a T. Inside, the kinship with the Ypsilon (and its DS cousins) is immediately apparent: dual horizontal screens, floating center console and a small round panel at the top of the dashboard, a house signature.

A very Stellantis cousin

Let's be honest: the Gamma doesn't hide its origins. It's built on the STLA Medium platform and will be produced at the Melfi plant in southern Italy, alongside the DS N°7, DS N°8 and Jeep Compass. Mechanically, it draws from the group's parts bin.

The base model reuses the well-known 1.2 micro-hybrid engine with 145 hp, familiar throughout Stellantis. On the electric side, three variants are announced: a 230 hp version with 73.7 kWh battery (540 km WLTP range), a Long Range version with 245 hp and 97.2 kWh climbing to 740 km, and finally an all-wheel drive variant with 375 hp credited with 675 km. The electric motors are permanent magnet synchronous motors. Note: no plug-in hybrid is planned, contrary to what early rumors suggested.

Timeline and strategy

Order books are expected to open after summer 2026, with a first public appearance at the Paris Motor Show in October 2026. Official pricing has not yet been announced by Lancia. The context remains particular: in the Stellantis reorganization, Lancia is now classified as a "specialty brand" and its management is handled in synergy with Fiat. This raises some questions about the initially promised premium trajectory.

But no matter the headwinds: with the Gamma, Lancia makes a genuine statement of intent. A mythical name, bold design, credible electrified mechanics. The renaissance is underway.
